Northwestern High School has received one of two 2016 High Schools That Work (HSTW) Top Performing High Schools in NE Ohio Region honor. This recognition is based on the performance of its 2016 graduates on the national 2016 HSTW Student Survey. NWHS exceeded all schools nationally and was a top performing school in HSTW NE Ohio Region in Math, Science, Career Pathways, and supporting students with individualized extra help.
87 NWHS 12th-grade students participated in the survey, along with 24,221 students in 16 member states in the Southern Regional Education Board's HSTW national network. SREB works to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through doctoral education. Ohio joined the SREB HSTW network in 1998 and the Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) network in 2002.
Diana Rogers, HSTW executive director, praised the school for its achievement, noting the crucial role of Ohio high schools in graduating all students ready to be enrolled, employed or enlisted.
HSTW is a data-driven school improvement design that challenges schools to create a high performing school improvement culture where all students take challenging academics and career/technical courses in high school to prepare for success in postsecondary education and career.

Northwestern Middle School was named one of two of the area’s Top Performing Middle Schools as recognized by Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) for exceeding all schools nationally on the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) 2016 MMGW Student and Teacher Surveys. Loudonville Middle School was the other area Middle School so recognized. NWMS students indicated that the school has an intensive emphasis in science curriculum, Engineering and math, Career development and pathways, engaging science as well as extra help.
107 eighth-grade students participated in the 2016 MMGW Student Survey, along with 30,702 eighth-grade students from 242 schools in the SREB MMGW Network. SREB works with its 16-member states to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through doctoral education. Ohio joined the SREB High Schools That Work (HSTW) network in 1998 and the MMGW network in 2002.

According to Northwestern Middle School Joey Brightbill, “As a building, we continue to set high expectations, increase the rigor and engage our students in higher level learning that is real and authentic. NMS has created a culture of collaboration that promotes all staff to work together to improve teaching and learning as evidence by the student and teacher responses on the surveys to curriculum instruction and the learning culture. We offer all students the opportunity to engage in challenging middle school courses that are preparing them for success at the high school, and ready for postsecondary education and careers.”
This recognition is presented by the board of trustees of HSTW Ohio Network, a nonprofit organization that supports High Schools That Work (HSTW) and MMGW in northeast Ohio and statewide.
