General Announcements

The drama club read-through has been moved to today after school.

The speech and debate club is looking for volunteers to participate in their Big Questions school wide debate on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, after school.  The speech and debate team will provide all research and help each student prepare for the debate.  You will debate against three of your peers during the competition here at the school.  See Mr. Martin or Mr. Rininger by December 20, 2017 for information.

Thanks to everyone who is participating in the STAR Share a Christmas. Now that December has arrived, the STAR elves are awaiting the arrival of gifts. If you took a tag from the tree, please wrap your gifts and return them to Mrs. Wyles room by Friday December 15th, WITH the card attached to it.  You can buy as much as you want, but PLEASE try and buy at least one clothing item and at least one toy for each child. 

The district will be hosting a Cookies and Canvas Community Painting Night on December 20th. We will be doing a step-by-step approach to a beautiful painting. $15 per person - We will supply paint, brushes, and canvas! For more information pick up a flier from the front office!

Student school fees are due by January 3, 2018.  Fees must be paid in order to continue participating in athletics and any other extra-curricular activities including prom.  If you need to see how much you owe please see Mrs. Reed in the front office.  

The Wayne county Performing Arts Council will be holding auditions for their Spring production of “The Secret Garden”.  Young actors are needed!  Auditions will be held December 14th and 16th.  For more information, stop by the office and pick up a flyer.

We will be on a 2 hour early release schedule on Wednesday, December 20.

Class of 2018: Senior photos and baby pictures are due by Friday, January 5, 2018. These need to be submitted to Mrs. Hudson. Please submit digitally, if possible, by sending a .jpg to nrws_khudson@tccsa.net. You will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive this email, your photos have not been received (please make arrangements with your photographer if they will be emailing the photos). You may also share photos ONLY (no docs or PDFs) with Mrs. Hudson using the NW Google Drive. If necessary, hard copies of photos will be accepted. You may drop those off in the high school office in an envelope with your name printed on it. Contact Mrs. Hudson at nrws_khudson@tccsa.net with questions.

Jr. Class Post Prom will be selling CR Blooms punch cards from November 21 - December 18. These make great Christmas presents!  They are only $25 and you get flowers once a month for a year!

2016-2017 yearbooks are in! If you pre-ordered a yearbook, please stop by Mrs. Hudson's room in between classes or during Extra Help to pick yours up. If you want to purchase a yearbook, don't hesitate! Limited quantities available. Extra yearbooks are $50. 

Any student who will be driving to school this year will need to stop in at the front office and pick up a parking application. Parking permits are to be kept in your vehicle.

Guidance Announcements

Attention Sophomores: There will be an interest meeting on Friday, January 5, during Extra Help for any sophomores interested in the International Baccaleurate - or IB - program. This program is hosted at Wooster High School for a student's junior and senior years, and is intended for high performing and highly motivated students interested in an international understanding. Interested students must sign up in Guidance before the meeting. 

Hiram College is sponsoring an Emerging Writers Nonfiction contest for 11th and 12th graders.  Deadline is 1/12/18.  See the guidance office for more information.

Hiram College is exploring the role that comics and graphics can help in healthcare and are sponsoring a graphic medicine narrative competition.  Deadline is 3/1/2018.  See the guidance office for more information.  
Denison University will be holding an eight-day residential summer writing program.  For more info, see poster hanging in the English hall. Deadline to apply is March. 4th.
Are you a sophomore, junior, or senior athlete?  Are you involved in community activities or service to the community?  Are you interested in being nominated for the US Army-Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence?  If you answered yes to all these questions, stop in to the guidance office for more information.  Deadline to apply is January 12th.

Interested in being an FBI agent?  The FBI’s Cleveland Field office will be having a Future Agents in Training academy June 19-22.  See the guidance office for more info if interested.  Deadline to apply is January 31.

Attention Seniors: November is College Application Month! Did you know that nearly 29% of our NHS Class of 2018 has already applied to a 2-year or 4-year college? Getting your applications in early helps increase your chance of getting accepted as well as increase the chance of earning scholarships from that college. As you apply, be sure to log onto your Naviance account to verify that you have submitted your application and to request transcripts. The Guidance Office is here to help with any questions. 

College updates (Shared periodically as information is received from area colleges):

1. University of Akron: If you're interested in attending UA and have at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and at least a 27 ACT Composite score, you could be eligible for admissions to The Williams Honors College. Perks of the honors program include potential scholarships, special on-campus housing, faculty mentors, and priority scheduling. 

2. University of Mt. Union is hosting a Presidential Scholarship Program on Saturday, December 2. The program offers renewable, full-tuition awards to eight first-year students. Remaining candidates will maintain their previously awarded Trustee Scholarship of $18,000. Eligibility requirements include an ACT Composite score of at least a 30 and a minimum GPA of 3.75. You must apply and be admitted to Mount Union prior to the program date. 

3. Bowling Green State University: Interested in becoming a math or science teacher? BGSU's Science and Math Education in ACTION Program offers recipients $4,000 the first year of college with increases each year up to more than $5,000 the fourth year (total value of scholarship is approximately $20,000). Criteria includes at least a 3.0 GPA and at least a 23 ACT Composite score. 

Attention Seniors: Are you planning on playing Varsity athletics in college? We currently do not have a single student from the Class of 2018 registered with the NCAA or NAIA Clearinghouse. Create your account today and then let us know in Guidance so we can send your transcript. Don't forget to request to have your ACT scores sent directly to the Clearinghouse.

Pre-Sale tickets are available in the high school office for the WQKT Holiday Hoops Classic boys basketball game on December 23rd vs. Colonel Crawford at 7pm at the College of Wooster.  Adult tickets are $7.00 and students are $5.00.  Cash only.
The annual NW battle of the Best Cheer competition will be held December 17 @ 2pm.  Come support NW high school and middle school competitive teams.
