I could not be more proud of the accomplishments of our students and our Northwestern faculty, staff, and administrators!  The accomplishments of our students has been fantastic!  The accolades received for our educational excellence and leadership has been astounding and we continue leading the pack in so many ways!  There is so much ongoing evidence of our schools doing great work with our students.  Whether it be their exemplifying leadership, participating in athletics, clubs, or student organizations, fine arts, area 4-H, community volunteerism, STEM programs, core foundational courses, or extracurricular activities we absolutely prepare our students today for tomorrow’s opportunities!  More so, we have used collaboration with business, post-secondary, and community partners, grant writing to secure additional, and striving for efficiencies to pursue our mission within our financial constraints. As a district we continue adhering to the goals and strategies within our strategic plan that include:

 

=         Providing authentic, real-world learning and advancement

=         Continue refining and expanding authentic learning through Project-based learning and STEM, as well as our Career Pathways and Career Planning

=         Improved individualizing and differentiating of instruction to better challenge and meet our individual students’ needs

=         Expanded, universal Preschool (currently 38 children in two classes)

=         Expanded and improved Science and career pathway lab spaces – most especially at the high school

=         Studying flexible hours, days, year scheduling

=         Control expenditures and revenue

=         Adaptation & changing structures

=         Continued pertinent professional development

=         Expanding use of technology & blending learning to improve efficiencies and effectiveness

=         Continue our collaborative learning culture

=         Our concerted, collaborative student-centered approach

=         Our multi-year career education focus

=         Expanding Opportunities Grant

=         Our great people here and throughout our community helping our students thrive!

 

We are aligned, with common purpose and we strengthen one another through our collaboration - continuing the courage to do what is right by our kids and not allow ourselves to be limited to the tunnel vision of only focusing on test scores or teaching to the numerous state assessments. 

We are continually adapting and strengthening 21st C skill development that requires us to continually adapt instruction utilizing emerging research and tools in preparing our students today for tomorrow’s opportunities for knowledge, life, and career.  We have passionate, talented, and dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators who I am confident will continue working collaboratively in meeting these challenges.

 

A few Northwestern informational tidbits:

=         We are a rural school district with @ 1320 students (more than 241 student open enrolled into our schools).

=         We are located on a single campus – 3 buildings: Pre-K – 5 ES; 6-8 MS; 9-12 HS with many CCP College courses offered on our campus for students taught by our teachers as adjunct professors..

=         1st K-12 District in Ohio earning OSLN Dept. of Education STEM Designation.

=         Northwestern has a 3,000 Sq. Ft. Greenhouse/Clean Energy Lab where students learn greenhouse production and experience geothermal, Wind Turbine, Biofuel Plant, and Solar electric generation.

=         Northwestern has a “Sugar Shack” Maple Syrup Learning Center at our Elementary School where student produce maple syrup and other products from tree sap on our property from trees along our nature trail.  Our HS Clean/Renewable Energy Program students are planning to work with OSU-OARDC and OSU-ATI and install donated solar panels for fans and lighting for the Sugar Shack.

=         Exceptional Fine Arts Programs

=         7 distinct 7-12 Career Pathways with college partnerships and credits embedded within the programs (Engineering, Biomedical, Agricultural Science, Clean-Renewable Energy, Computer Science, Business Finance & Entrepreneurship, Teacher/Education)

=         We require a 5th Gr. Career Project, 8th Gr. Career Project, Senior Seminar Capstone Project.

=         Senior Pre-Apprenticeship Engineering Program.

=         Senior Internship Program.

=         Numerous Student Organizations & opportunities through these and Science Fair to participate & excel in state and national competitions.

=         Our Middle School offers more than 32 elective courses, many of which are STEM-focused

Our community has so much to be grateful for - our families, friends, and wonderful school system. In our schools we have extraordinary teachers and support staff, wonderful administrators, and wise Board of Education Members. We also have numerous support organizations which help our mission such as Ruritans, All Sports, PTOs, Music Boosters, Alumni & Friends, FFA Alumni, etc. 

I take great pride in sharing the continued accomplishments of our students, community, and schools. The supports and relationships throughout our community are unique. We can take great pride in our schools and together we can continue to strive for even greater heights. With our dedicated administrators, staff, and community we will continue striving for and achieving well-beyond expectations. 

We are all about excellence and increasing expectations at Northwestern. Within our Northwestern family we will continue to focus on the needs of our students. We will continue to prepare our students today for tomorrow’s opportunities!
